Anatomy/Appearance
The Loggerhead turtle's shell is a reddish brown color and the underbelly is a pale yellow. It has four legs and claws, but it doesn't have any fur. The skin is some times yellow or brown. The adult turtle weights 298 lb.
Diet
The Loggerhead turtle is carnivorous eating bottom dwelling invertebrates. It eats clams, crabs, urchins, sponges, whelks, other mollusks, horseshoe and more. The Loggerhead turtle crushs it's prey.
Loggerhead's Life Cycle
The life cycle starts when a female lays an egg on the beach. Then, when the egg hatches (which takes about six weeks) , a baby crawls out, making its way to the water. Predators do try to attack the hatchlings so they must be careful!
Reproduction and Young
Females lay eggs some where between 40 and 190 eggs per clutch on the beach. Scientists say that nesting takes about 2 years. The age of reproducing begins at 10 and 30 years but, some other scientists believe that it is 34 and 37 years.
Behavior
Little is known about the Loggerhead Sea Turtle's behavior. Loggerheads gather together to mate. Members of some species travel together to nesting grounds. After hatchlings reach the water they generally remain solitary until they mate. The way they find their way to the water is they follow the light of the moon. That's why it's important for neighboring houses to keep their lights off at night during the season of hatchlings hatching.
